Porcelain People Vessels – Gail Altschuler. Nov 2020
These porcelain vessels were started in lockdown March 2020.
I make the porcelain with rolled out slabs of porcelain, carefully assembled and slowly dried, while being wrapped up in plastic and in a sealed container for 2-3 weeks. They are drawn onto and illustrated using my many sketchbooks filled with observations of the life around me over the years. The drawn lines are then deepened and corrected using a sharp pin needle tool, these lines are then filled with black or electric blue underglaze, when the underglaze has dried, the lines are cleaned up and made sharp. Coloured areas are added and scratched into combining the Mishima, inlay technique with sgraffito and thin coloured wash painting. The vessels have the initial bisque firing to 1000’c and later a covering clear, transparent glaze is added before the final firing to 1220’c.
I have been covering various themes; musicians, buddha sculptures, plants, children at play and objects drawn while visiting museums.

Gail began as a silkscreen printer, printing large, abstract, colourful works on paper, that have been used for interior design in hotels and offices. These works are to be found in corporate collections in Europe, USA, South Africa, Japan and the UK. She now concentrates on using graphic and printmaking techniques on clay and porcelain combining printing techniques with painting methods. Besides selling her work through galleries, art consultants and exhibitions, she teaches both adults and children, on zoom, as well.
