The Gardeners vessels

Gail Altschuler

Blurring the lines between art and craft, Gail uses porcelain as her canvas. Storytelling, unique plates for art installations, and sculptural vessels that hold water.

Sketchbook observations are drawn, etched, inlaid and painted, under transparent glaze. Themes include relationships, couples, siblings, musicians and artists.

Colourful and irreverent with heart. Inspired by jazz music, improvisation and art history narratives,

‘primitive and sophisticated all at once’.

‘Altschuler’s work is relatable and quirky.’

Gail began her career as a silkscreen printer, printing large, abstract, colourful works on paper, that are used for interior design in hotels and offices.

These works are found in corporate collections in Europe, USA, South Africa, Japan, and the UK. Sold by art consultants 1985-2005.

Besides selling her work through galleries, art consultants and exhibitions, she teaches adults, teens and children.

Gail teaches, drawing, painting, art history, and hand-built ceramics, from her home studio.

She teaches art and art history lessons weekly, online, on zoom.

Gail studied at The Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam.

She has a PGCE and MA in Art and Design Education, from the Institute of Education, University of London.

She has exhibited at the The Contemporary Ceramic Centre opposite the British Museum, at the Icehouse and Orangery in Holland Park, The Kiln Theatre Kilburn,

Lauderdale House in Highgate, London and at The Woman’s Art Collection (Murray Edwards) in Cambridge, UK.

She is represented on the artuk.org website.

My name is Joy and I am the Homes editor for Saga (Saga publishes for the affluent 55+ market and currently has the highest circulated magazine in the UK).

I popped into the Contemporary Ceramics Gallery last week and I fell in love with your pots – I am about to publish a feature on makers and spring flowers. Attached is one example of an image of your pots I captured.
