Porcelain Narrative Display Plates
The Porcelain Portrait Plates, are handmade, painted porcelain plates inspired by human facial expressions and relationships. It all begins with a drawing from my sketchbook and an idea to explore. The unfired porcelain is porous and smooth. It is the perfect surface to paint onto, score or etch into and sgrafitto through, before the bisque firing. Sometimes ceramic underglazes and oxides are painted using expressive brush marks. Later a transparent glaze is added and it is fired to 1220’c. The plates have a wall hanging disc attached on the back or are displayed on a plate stand.
The themes include; Facial expressions, Zoom Meetings, Dog Walkers, Refugees, Musicians and Siblings.
Photographs above by Bill Mudge, Mike Coles and Richard Kalini.
